A Poetry Unit by Ms. Garcia's Eighth Grade English Class
Our class is learning about poetry and its structure. Similes and metaphors are two examples of figurative language. A simile is is a comparison using like or as. It usually compares two dissimilar objects. A metaphor states that one thing is something else. It is a comparison, but it does NOT use like or as to make the comparison.
In this unit, we will divide the class into groups of three. Using the Internet, our groups will find examples of these types of figurative language, explain and illustratate their usage, and create a PowerPoint presentation to share with the class.
Good Starting Points Include. . . . .
Figurative Language A site, from the United Kingdom, that is a great starting point about learning what similes and metaphors are.
Metaphors in Poetry This site will show you an example of finding similes and metaphors in poetry plus it describes (in detail) how and why they are used in poetry.
Figurative Language This site is about figurative language in Robert Frost's poetry. It gives examples of similes and metaphors given in his poems, as well as which poem it came from.
